Effigies of the Tsar and Lenin side by side: 1931/1932 from F. Bordewijk to H. Th. Wijdeveld
In this contribution the fascination of Dutch intellectuals at the end of the second decennium for the developments in the Soviet Union is confronted with the trip that the architect H.Th. Wijdeveld took to this new state in the beginning of 1932. He went there in search for a job. Initially he was full of optimism but after having talked to many people and he returned to the Netherlands rather disillusioned. Thanks especially to the lively correspondence with his family at home it is possible to construct an interesting picture of his experience.
With the famous novel Blokken [Blocks] of the writer Ferdinand Bordewijk in mind one understands how the idea of an utopian state turns into a dystopian reality. Whereas Bordewijks vison was considered a cold and ‘new objective’ construction that was similar to the view of many architects of the new society, Wijdeveld remained an expressionistic dreamer who had many difficulties of finding his way through life. While keeping his spirits high and still believing that his mission was to bring beauty to the world, In this crucial period of his life he had to overcome many disappointments.
Samenvatting - In deze bijdrage wordt de fascinatie van Nederlandse intellectuelen aan het eind van het tweede decennium voor de ontwikkelingen in de Sovjet-Unie geconfronteerd met de reis die architect H.Th. Wijdeveld begin 1932 ondernam naar deze nieuwe staat. Daar ging hij op zoek naar een baan. Aanvankelijk was hij optimistisch, maar na met veel mensen gesproken te hebben keerde hij nogal gedesillusioneerd terug naar Nederland. Vooral dankzij de levendige correspondentie met zijn familie thuis is het mogelijk om een interessant beeld van zijn ervaring op te bouwen. Met de beroemde roman Blokken [Blocks] van de schrijver Ferdinand Bordewijk in gedachten, begrijpt men hoe het idee van een utopische staat verandert in een dystopische realiteit. Waar Bordewijks visioen werd beschouwd als een koude en 'nieuw zakelijke'-constructie die leek op de visie van veel architecten van de nieuwe samenleving, bleef Wijdeveld een expressionistische dromer die veel moeite had om zijn weg door het leven te vinden. Terwijl hij zijn humeur hoog hield en nog steeds geloofde dat het zijn missie was om schoonheid naar de wereld te brengen, moest hij in deze cruciale periode van zijn leven veel teleurstellingen overwinnen.
