Moscow Voyage of C. van Eesteren and S. Giedion in the Context of History of the IV Congress of the CIAM
The Moscow voyage of C. van Eesteren and S. Giedion, which took place from 4 to 14 December 1932, still remains a little-studied episode in the preparation for the IV Congress of the CIAM. The materials of the Russian archives make it possible to reconstruct this event and show new facets in the history of the Moscow Congress.
First of all, the report is supposed to highlight the program of the stay of C. van Eesteren and S. Giedion in Moscow, namely: what meetings were planned and held, which of the Soviet architects was a participant in these meetings and what issues were discussed; how the program of acquaintance with the achievements of contemporary Soviet architecture was organized and what objects were presented; how the professional side of the trip was combined with the technologies developed by the VOKS for receiving foreign guests and demonstrating the achievements of the USSR.
The official statement of the purpose of the visit of CIAM’s representatives sounded very clear - “to discuss the program of the Congress and all issues related to its holding”. However, it is also important to understand what tasks both parties set for themselves in these negotiations, and what contradictions took place. Most importantly, it is supposed to show that the discussion of the upcoming forum was for C. van Eesteren and S. Giedion a difficult search for a compromise between the interests of the CIAM and the Soviet side, and this was reflected in the final "Directives for the preparation and holding of the IV International Congress of New Architecture", developed in Moscow.
The stay in Moscow of C. van Eesteren and S. Giedion is planned not only to be placed in the context of the history of the IV Congress and the transformation of Soviet architecture, but it also will be shown in the report how the priority of state interests over professional interests predetermined the USSR's refusal to hold the Congress and nullified the results of the Moscow voyage.
Московский вояж К. ван Эстерна и З. Гидиона в контексте истории IV конгресса CIAM.
Московский вояж К. ван Эстерна и З. Гидиона, состоявшийся с 4 по 14 декабря 1932 г., до сих пор остается малоизученным эпизодом в подготовке IV конгресса CIAM. Материалы российских архивов позволяют реконструировать это событие и показать новые грани в истории Московского конгресса.
Прежде всего, в докладе предполагается осветить программу пребывания К. ван Эстерна и З. Гидиона в Москве, а именно: какие встречи были запланированы и проведены, кто из советских архитекторов был участником этих встреч и какие вопросы обсуждались; как строилась программа ознакомления с достижениями современной советской архитектуры и какие объекты были представлены; как сочетались профессиональная сторона поездки и разработанные ВОКС технологии по приему иностранных гостей и демонстрации достижений СССР.
Официальная формулировка цели приезда представителей CIAM звучала предельно ясно – «для обсуждения программы конгресса и всех вопросов, связанных с его проведением». Однако важным представляется также понять, какие задачи ставили перед собой обе стороны в этих переговорах, и какие противоречия имели место. Главное, предполагается показать, что обсуждение предстоящего форума стало для К. ван Эстерна и З. Гидиона непростым поиском компромисса между интересами CIAM и советской стороны, и это нашло свое отражение в итоговых «Директивах для подготовки и проведения IV Международного конгресса новой архитектуры», выработанных в Москве.
Пребывание в Москве К. ван Эстерна и З. Гидиона планируется не только поместить в контекст истории IV конгресса и трансформации советской архитектуры, но и показать, как приоритет государственных интересов над профессиональными предопределил отказ СССР от проведения конгресса и свел на нет результаты московского вояжа.
