At the beginning of the 1990s, the Kunstmuseum no longer met modern museum requirements. Various internal renovations had obscured the original concepts by Berlage. In 1995-1998 Braaksma & Roos Architects did an integral restoration and renovation of the national monument from 1935. This included an expansion of the museum underneath the central courtyard with additional exhibition spaces, the so-called Wonderkamers. In 2014, Braaksma & Roos transformed the central courtyard into the Tuinzaal.
